Good company. Simple food. A welcoming table.
An easier way to host, starting with a meal you already love to make.

Choose familiar food
Hosting is easier when the main dish is one you have made before. Ask guests about dietary needs before planning, then choose accompaniments that can be served separately. A simple menu leaves more attention for the people at the table.
Set yourself up early
Lay the table and prepare serving dishes before you begin the final cooking. Read the recipe from start to finish and identify what can be made ahead using its storage instructions. Keep the last few tasks short enough that you can greet people without feeling rushed.
Leave room for everyone
Serve food in a way that lets guests choose their own portions. Put water within easy reach and leave space for dishes to move around the table. You do not need an elaborate centrepiece: a clear table, comfortable seats and a thoughtful meal are a good beginning.
